Tweet for Puffins!: The NEVERSINK Adopt-A-Puffin Campaign

In honor of Neversink, Barry Wolverton's debut novel (pub 3/27/12), we want to lend our support to a great organization: The National Audubon Society's Project Puffin.

Here's the plan: From Tuesday, March 27th through Friday, March 30th, help us support Project Puffin's wonderful Adopt-A-Puffin program. For every 100 tweets we receive of the following message, we will contribute money to adopt one puffin from Project Puffin:

Provided we reach at least 100 tweets, we will select one classroom, school, or library at random from all participants in whose name the puffin will be adopted. The chosen group will receive a photograph and biography of the puffin as well as a certificate signed by the Director of the program, Dr. Stephen Kress. Help us protect Atlantic Puffins by adopting one! This donation goes directly to the scientists living and working on Puffin Islands each summer.

Project Puffin scientists work on the Maine coast to bring Atlantic Puffins and other seabirds back to islands where they once lived but had disappeared, due to hunting, in the late 1800’s.  These young and dedicated college students live directly on the islands where the birds nest, and help protect them from disturbances, while studying and banding them.  Since 1973, they have restored three puffin colonies, with about 1200 pairs of birds currently nesting, as well as 8000 pairs of migratory Terns, including some on the endangered species list.
